We already feel the effects of the closure of Lichfield Record Office which affects researchers in Warwickshire, Staffordshire and Worcestershire. The Hive is too important a resource to be treated this way.

An archive repository is not a leisure activity, it is a key part of our history, heritage and culture - and not just at local level. I work on a national British Academy Research Project (called the Hearth Tax Project) which is currently using Worcs archives to support its forthcoming publication 'The Worcestershire and Worcester Hearth Tax 1662-89', one of a series of 20 volumes with broad appeal from academics across the world to local genealogists. Moreover, archives need to be staffed by professional conservationists and historians. Our documentary (& photographic) heritage is something to be proud of. It's what tells us about who we are. How will history judge us if we don't acquit ourselves well in this respect?

Having used the professional sservices of the records office over the last 30 years it's with great disappointment that I hear of the very short sighted project to cut the funding by such an enormous amount of money. Once this damage is done it will cost the ratepayers a terrific amount of money and time to recover the service to the community that the archives office provides at present - please think twice

This has been a very useful resource for me in researching the history of the area, and as I'm based in Kent it's crucial that it's open as much as possible to enable that work. We can only understand the history of the country if we're able to have full access to the records in the counties.
