Worcestershire County Council intend to cut £405K from their funding of the Hive Archive and Archaeology Department now housed at the Hive: the joint library of the University and County of Worcester. This over 50% cut in funding would be in addition to recently restricted opening hours for the Archive' which is used by students and residents of Worcestershire undertaking research about the county. Such a cut in funding would damage research opportunities for local and family historians, genealogists, and staff and students fro the universities. Indeed it would hinder outstanding research projects undertaken by the University of Worcester at under-graduate, post-graduate and post-Doctoral levels. This archive is also used to aid teaching within the History Subject Area of the University For these reasons it important that these cuts are resisted.

My family estate at Alscot Park in Warwickshire had a property at Saintbury. In addition parts of the current estate near Newbold were likewise in the county of Worcestershire so I much need access to your county records.
As a professional genealogist, Worcestershire's award-winning archives are a very valuable resource. We should be encouraging other counties to follow the Hive's unique collaboration, not cutting facilities for researchers, academics and students.
the archive collections at the Hive are not only regionally important, but some, like the Croome Court records are of national significance. These latter have only rece tly been expensively catalogued. to reduce access by budget cuts would be such a waste.
As a local historian and contributor to the archive of some 6,000+ historical photographs of Worcester, I feel that it’s continuance is a vital and essential component providing a resource for research into local history.
I am a historian and would like to add that papers which might seem worthless now will be gold in 20, 30, 500 years. And if we don't preserve opportunities to study our past, we'll be subject to whatever uninformed stories other people want to tell about us.
I don't know what the current situation is, but I would like to record my support for maintaining funding for The Hive. I visited it several times for material in support of a Milestone Society Project to restore six nationally unique cast Iron mileposts on a former Turnpike through Shipston on Stour. We were successful in obtaining a Heritage Lottery Fund Grant for the project.
It's a resource impossible to replace

As course leader for History at the University of Worcester I am gravely concerned at the potential impact of these savage cuts. The Archives are an essential resource for university staff, our students and the general public.
