The university has officially agreed to restore the UW Club. I honestly just started this as a small hope, so seeing this result feels completely surreal. This win belongs entirely to the three hundred people who spoke up for the community space we all missed.

As the University community strives to rebuild the vibrancy that marked our pre-pandemic culture on campus, we ask the University’s leadership to restore one vital piece of that culture lost during the last two years: the UW Club.
We know that the University must balance the use of space and funds with other needs and future projects, but the UW Club is truly unique and what it provides to faculty and staff has no parallel on campus. The UW Club was open for membership to all members of the UW community, across all three campuses, and for any faculty and staff affiliated with UW regardless of rank. The UW Club is where we brought our job candidates to impress them with views of Mt. Rainier (on a good day). It is where we could woo a potential donor or thank a recent one. It is where we went to congratulate our graduating students with a celebratory meal. The UW Club was a space where we held workshops, conferences, faculty retreats, promotions and retirement celebrations. The UW Club is where staff and faculty could gather for lunch, coffee or a drink and create the kind of collegial connection that brought many of us to the University and to a life of teaching, research, and learning together.
We know the loss of the UW Club is minor in comparison to the losses so many of us in our UW community have suffered. But it is one loss that the UW can address and rebuild.

I have been reaching out to the administration to see if we can get a conversation started about the future of the club. Your stories about why this place mattered are the only reason anyone is listening to me right now.

You could point out that the UW Club building exists because the faculty paid for it. Under the leadership of Professor Robert Sutermeister the Club floated bonds which the faculty bought and the proceeds paid for the building.
Virtually all of the interdisciplinary initiatives and coauthored papers I participated in were hatched at the Faculty Club. And what a gem it was to have someplace to go alone to get work done while feeling in community. There is no substitute on campus.
This building provides both an extraordinary set of architectural delights (views, spaces in and out, flexible use) and a unique community gathering space. It's an iconic treasure with historical significance, and losing would be a tragedy.
The UW club was instrumental in department activities like faculty recruiting, mentoring lunches, happy hours for department chairs, PhD visit days, awards dinners, and more. So much of what is fun about academia has already been lost. Please bring back the UW club!
The UW Club was the only place on campus where we could always extend UW hospitality in style to a whole range of visiting VIPs - ambassadors, heads of state, influential community members and others - in the process of building lasting relationships that have benefited UW immeasurably.

community gathering spaces for staff and faculty are very limited in the heart of the UW campus. We often have to compete with crowded, large student areas. The UW Club was a gem on campus and eliminating it a decision not in the best interest of our community.
