The staff common room has provided an amazing service enjoyed by UCD staff and postgraduate students for many years. I believe that the new alumni centre will not replace the service which the common room currently provides. Therefore, the justification given by Prof. Deeks for the proposed closure of the common room club is groundless.

the best meme I saw in college was one of Mr Krabs from SpongeBob with Deeks' face on it saying "I like money." And I think that truly speaks to something.

The Common Room represents UCD's diverse nature and non-elitarian character. Closing it would be short-sighted and remove a platform vital for inter-disciplinary engagement and discourse under a non-corporate theme. It should under all circumstances be allowed to continue.

Dont confuse common with commonplace. Places that exist to nurture and support the aim for a common good are rare, and as such, deserve proctection.

It's a very handy and relaxing place to meet colleagues

As a former UCD student and staff member, I always appreciated the Common Room as a unique venue to relax and connect with colleagues. The Common Room highlights many of the best aspects of UCD - collegiality, accessibility, and sincerity - and closing it would be a grave mistake.

I am a current PhD candidate in the UCD School of Chemistry who values the common room. Please do not take this facility from the students

My academic life would be much poorer without the Common Room. I have met more people from a wider diversity of disciplines there than anywhere else in the world, I have discovered new ideas and books in other subjects, and I have made great friends. The collegiality of the Common Room signals why UCD is a great place to work. Please do not shut it down!

This room is central to the teaching and learning development of the university. Its closure represents a further disregard for student and staff interests.

The Common Room offers a valuable professional and social experience for academic staff, postgraduate students and even conference attendees. It continues to be a great facilitator of interdisciplinary scholarship and cooperation which should be welcomed and nurtured in a modern university. Every effort should be made to preserve this valuable institution.

When I joined UCD back in 1999/2000 the Common Room was the space that gave me the chance to meet colleagues outside of my own subject area. It is key to collegiality in the university. Without it, I'd know far fewer colleagues and my whole experience of UCD would be much the poorer.

I sign as a past employee of the Common Room Club, who witnessnessed first hand for years the value of the space, and also as an alumnus of UCD.
