The Castle needs a careful restoration, not a project that would undermine its foundation. The Haupt Garden is a valued oasis in the brutish atmosphere of LEnfant Plaza that enhances the Castle's architecture. Let BIG do something at a lower cost, please, around the Hirshhorn where modernism is more appropriate.

In every trip to DC, regardless of the season, we always go to the Smithsonian Garden. It's beauty and serenity is a God Send to visitors. It would truly be a crime to demolish this national treasure. Please reconsider.

This garden is one of my favorite spots around the Mall. It manages to feel secluded and peaceful despite its location. I love sitting by the fountains, listening to the sound of the water and watching the birds splash. The Mall does not need a "plaza"; the Mall basically IS a plaza.

As a lifelong Washingtonian and frequent visitor to the Smithsonian's galleries, I know the need for improvements, maintenance and up-dates, but often the attractions folks most appreciate are the simpler ones... like the Enid Haupt Garden.

The Mall is becoming like many city spaces, overdeveloped and overbuilt. For our nation's capital, especially, we need to maintain some of the lovely, planned garden spaces that, like the architecture and artifacts, are national treasures. Once gone, green space can not be replaced easily. Please save the Haupt garden as a national heirloom for future generations.

The Haupt & Ripley gardens are among my very favorite places in DC. People's faces light up when they arrive in these gorgeous oases. They create a perfect soothing presence amidst the hubbub of the Mall. Please keep the gardens!
