With all the new, weighty, and intrusive memorials being erected, and the many historic beauties being removed or destroyed throughout the world, it is hard to understand the derelict notion of demolishing the the Haupt Garden. It is one of the finest, and surely most glorious visual, art, and historic places in the Nation's Capital. A garden of unequaled grandeur in America, It must be preserved.

I recently visited the garden again as I was at the Sackler Museum. It is a jewel in the wasteland that is the mall.

The garden is a quiet haven from the Mall, a botanical beauty spot, and a Victorian design very much in keeping with the architecture of the adjacent Castle. Why in the world would one want to reconfigure and ruin it?

Before I signed I went to see what had been proposed as a replacement.
I see it is intended to replace a lovely garden with grass circles.

As a Smithsonian Resident Associate member of many years, I ask that the plans be reviewed and redrawn and that the EH Garden be retained.

I have lived in DC almost all my life, and the Haupt Garden is one of the highlights of my days. The alternative design is disgusting and stupid and will never be used by anybody (despite the fakey renderings of children running through swirls of butterflies). PLEASE KEEP YOUR HANDS OFF THE GARDEN!

The proposed master plan is ill conceived - given destruction rather than enhancement of a cultural landmark - the Enid Haupt Garden and lacking comprehensive site planning to include Arts and Industries, a major part of the site.
