The Smell has introduced me to a myriad of new up and coming artists that I would never have had the chance to engage with elsewhere. I moved from a rural town in Idaho in 2013 to experience the artistry and culture of Los Angeles- of which The Smell has greatly contributed. It's rare to find an artistic venue that feels totally non-commercial, nonconformist and truly belonging to the people- of whom add a piece of themselves to each with each event. It would be a shame to be rid of an evironment so shameless and encouraging of self-expression.

The Smell is one of only a handful of DIY clubs in this city and serves as an epicenter for outsider art and music in Los Angeles. There wouldn't be the high demand and profitable gentrification without the ground work that this venue and the artists who frequented there created. And that was at a time when the world still hated LA. To destroy it would only continue LA's long standing tradition of whitewashing this city's art community in the name of capital. For once, just for once, it might be nice if this city supports local expression rather than financial endeavors. Just once.

The Smell is so important. For years it has been a place for kids to go, express themselves creatively, share in each others creative endeavors, have a community, and a safe place to be with positive influences. They should be allowed to continue the good work they've been doing for the community. Especially the under 21 crowd.

The smell is a wonderful and unique place that brings people together of all races and from all places even across the country together through music. To demolish this place is to discontinue this amazing thing, stopping the sharing of music and ending a community. Well I hope this place that I love isn't demolished.

When I was younger, trying to find access to people willing to hear what I had to offer as a musician was a difficult and shady process. Alot of venues want you to either pay for the pleasure of standing on their stage reguardless of the amount of people you draw, or have a scam where they try to get you to overcharge your friends and family to support you. Alot of the time I would be tolerating these kinds of lopsided deals just to get a chance at being exposed to anyone. The Smell however, and places that share the same ethical viewpoint on music/art are the answer to this predatory problem. They offer a space where you can express yourself, and be vulnerable in front of people that want to see what you have to offer. They do this at the minimal overhead cost. When I understood what the smell meant for artists. I knew that it had to exist forever. The smell is ground zero for musicians that want to begin a journey and see where it takes them. Every time I have gone to the smell, or performed at the smell I was transported to a place where I felt comfortable being me. I also would say that any bandmate that has played with me at the smell, or been to the smell with me has recognized that same magical feeling. To me the smell is a symbol of artistic freedom. People who need a means to get their artistic visions seen need a place like this. Its a shame that this very symbol is being threatened. Long Live the smell!

I love The Smell. I have seen some of my favorite bands at this venue (No Age, Ty Segall, King Tuff, Colleen Green, ect). The Smell holds a special place in my heart. Please take into consideration how meaningful The Smell is to the community.

The Smell and the Downtown Independent foster emerging artists and that is infinitely more important than another parking lot.

Keep the underground alive in Los Angeles. No more fake art condos.
