I went here when I visited my brother in California from Florida once and it was so badass; keep it open for the youth man because we gotta have our fun too!

Spent a lot of time at the Smell from ages 16-20, and it was very important to me. I imagine a lot of people feel the same way as I helped shape who I am today (now 30). I've only been a few times in the last 5 years or so but everytime it brings back some of my best memories of being an adolescent. It would be a shame if no one else got to experience that again.

You can't demolish something that has a lot of sentimental value to several people in the community

This is the best black in downtown. The Smell, theatre, and Jaliscos are part of my jam. Downtown LA is turning into the Bay Area and bringing phat money cross fittin biz owner pale t dawgs while it drives out the art and music that made it so desirable in the first place. This same situation is playing out over and over and it would seem cities would at least notice certain venues that made them a magnet for art in the first place. Parking lot.. poo.

Pretty much everyone of my friends in the LA area and many from other states have played or booked shows here. Without it, the connections that brought together nearly everyone in many alternative circles simply wouldn't exist. The Smell isn't just a building, venue, or place to hang out in LA but is one of the most notable breeding grounds and cultivator of underground creativity of its kind in the country, or world. Even if one hasn't played or been here, even if they think they're too cool or old for a place that doesn't exist to sell alcohol and stifle human interaction to the upper limits of shouted small talk, they no doubt have friendships with people whose formative experiences and inspirations can be traced back to the space and others like it who are struggling with similar situations all across the country. The reality is that The Smell serves as a sort of flagship model for underground venues, a place with longevity, integrity, affordability and is universally loved and respected, and is a key piece to a nationwide network of venues that is struggling to stay afloat not because of the importance of what they do, but due to the rapid influx of capitalist pursuits in places that people with money were scared to go until they finally realized there was some sort of magic in the streets and alleys that they could wash away and STILL charge people to live, eat and park next to.
