My great grandfather, two gg uncles and a ggg uncle lived and served in Polk County. None owned slaves. They fought, and fought bravely and honorably, because their homeland was invaded. They were defending their life, family and property from a foreign invasion. Three of these four descendants were taken as prisoners of war and sent to the "Andersonville of the North", Camp Douglas. My great grandfather was captured at home in Van Wert while on furlough. I am extremely proud of them and will honor their memory.
