We want the Diversity team in Plymouth and to ensure that their work continues and is not sacrificed. Plymouth has only been a dispersal area for Asylum Seekers since 2001 and those who are granted refugee status often remain in the city; there is an increase in black and ethnic minority populations; an increase in ethnic minority groups at the University, in colleges as well as other religions and the L.G.B.T`s population. However, the city has a reputation of being hostile to people from different ethnic backgrounds and the city is having an unusually high number of racially motivated incidents and many individuals are being discriminated against because of who they are, their origins, faith/religion or their sexuality. The facts tell us that our society and communities have people that do not understand others values and take pride in creating divisions, discriminating against and excluding other from society. The biggest hope any one can have is to be living in a safer, friendly and equal society. A community where everyone has same rights, where no one is discriminated against, where your rights are acknowledged, where your neighbours can accept each other regardless of their race, religion, sex, physical and mental ability, position in the society. The work of the Diversity Team has been invaluable to many community groups, not only in helping people when crimes take place, but also in developing and fostering trust with the asylum seeker and refugee and ethnic minority population who may come from countries where the role of the police is very different. Without this, many crimes would go unreported. Cutting this support will leave residents more vulnerable and isolated. The Diverse Community Team expertise of knowing what the problems are, how to deal with issues, building trust with residents, the victims and agencies is crucial in maintaining order. People have gained confidence in reporting their problem because they do not only trust who they speak to, but the person that understand their issues and who always make sure justice is equally and fairly served WE DO NOT WANT FRUSTRATED RESIDENTS IN OUR COMMUNITY AND WHERE PEOPLE FEEL EXCLUDED FROM OUR SOCIETY, WE RATHER WANT PEOPLE`S RIGHTS TO BE GIVEN TO THEM. Support this petition to ensure that the work for a safer , fair and equal community in Plymouth goes on.
