These lands are what define CPP. The agriculture department offers a chance for students to learn how to become some of the best Agricultural Majors around. It is also the home of the Arabian Horses, a gift that was given by Kellogg himself when the land was given to the CSU system. If that land is turned into more housing, it decreases the amount of area the horses, as well as the rest of the livestock, need to thrive and live in good health. It also puts the school at risk as part of the donated land; Kellogg said for the land to be preserved for educational use, the school and district must not allow the deprived life and health of the horses. If the school cannot maintain the Arabian horses, then the school must be closed. This is history that was mentioned at my orientation and I stand behind the belief that hands-on education is the best learning environment for all students and the preservation of the beautiful horses are priority, NOT more housing. By turning the lands into housing, the school is inadvertently decreasing the opportunity for students and non-students alike to experience the Agricultural world and the learning experience the school offers. In the long run, this is not the best choice to use the land; keep nature’s beauty preserved on these lands! That’s what defines Cal Poly Pomona!

Not only are these horse pastures an important tool for our Ag students, but they are also an important element of the history of Cal Poly Pomona. When W.K. Kellogg donated his ranch, he stipulated that the horse shows would continue. It's spelled out on the Kellogg Connection page on the Cal Poly Pomona website.

As an Arabian Horse owner and enthusiast, the Kellogg history of Cal Poly Pomona was a must see destination for me on my first trip to Southern CA. The pastures, barns, and agriculture program have value to many outside of the immediate CalPoly community. Please preserve this history.
