I coached the Newton Braves (boys basketball) for five years and am an Atlanta Braves on top of that. I respect and value the Native American culture, as do the staff, students, and community of Newton, NJ.

Who...really...cares?
All of these Indian-named sport's teams were cliche 30 years ago and they're cliche now.
If even a single fiber of your being is emotionally affected by the changing of a high school team name then congratulate yourself: you're doing so well in life that you are able to get upset over such an arbitrary change.
I say they should change it, and, furthermore, name it something more relevant to the town of Newton.
Allow me to be the first to suggest...ladies and gentlemen...I present...The Newton Suboxenes.

It is getting out of hand now, The NEWTON BRAVES emblem and name denotes only pride and bravery regarding our respect for Native American young men--"BRAVES". That is all it means. That is all it symbolizes. Don't make it something it isn't!!! What is happening in America is ridiculous these days! Give it a rest people...quit being so ultra-sensitive. Grow up! Find something to do with your time. You obviously have too much time on your hands because you now are complaining about EVERYTHING. End of Rant.

As a Native American, I find it more of an injustice to remove the Brave. It’s utterly ridiculous that someone would consider the word brave as a derogatory or racist term. We are the Braves, and we’ve held ourselves up with pride and continue to do so as Alumni and for generations to come! I’ll always be a Newton Brave! I could sit here and give you a list of offensive slurs that Natives have been called, though I’ll refrain from doing so. However, Brave I can guarantee is not one of them. Being a Brave is an honor, and everyone knows what it takes and what it stands for to be one.

This logo is respectful of Indian heritage and compliments it. Calling for its removal is an irresponsible and disruptive “game” being played by a small number of social vandals.
The school administration is obligated to determine the preference of the majority, and not “ dance “ for a few people out of weakness. Stand up and protect the school’s history.
