Why would Napa want to suppress the rich history of the Native American Indians that settled in this beautiful valley? In the 1700's, the Patwin Native Americans and possibly the Wappo tribes lived in the northwestern foothills. In the early 1830's there were six tribes living and warring in the valley, namely the Mayacomos, the Callajomans, the Kymus, the Ulcus, the Napa and the Soscol. There is a sense of pride when a person can show how Napa came to be.
Is the word "Indian" offensive? "Indian" is how the indigenous peoples of the Americas describe themselves. It is not a derogatory name. There may be no other group of people with as rich and storied culture as the Native American. Their history is rich in struggle, strife and triumph. Many familiar symbols that we take for granted were originated by Native Americans, such as the tee-pee, totem pole, peace pipe and moccasins. Who among you does not recognize these items?
There are over 500 recognized American Indian and Alaska Native tribes and villages in the US, each has it's own culture, language and history. Every tribe has unique traditions and distinct styles of housing, dress and food. Napa should be embracing this and teaching our children about these local ancestors.
It should be an honor to be called a Napa "Indian!" Your vote should be to keep "Indian," not forget it.

Mother of graduates 2005 and 2007. We have so many memories and the Indian mascot is fitting for the school and its long history and honors the Wappo indians who lived here before us

I believe the school board should keep the Napa High's mascot as it is. My grandmother, mother and myself have all graduated from Napa High School. I am proud of the Indian heritage of our region.

Failure to maintain the Mascot that myself, three sisters and Brother, who all attended Napa High and who respected the Mascot suggests that we and all other students that attended Napa High are some how prejudiced against Indians. It may also suggest that Napa HIgh is turning out students that an Indian would be ashamed of to represent.
Save Napa High schools mascot the Indian.
