Being a NHS Indian taught me to honor Native Americans. Imitation is the highest form of flattery. In no way is calling our mascot an Indian disrespectful. It is a sign of reverence.

There is nothing disrespectful about the Napa High mascot. It has been a sign of strength and pride! What has happened to my wonderful home town?It's not the same, it's being taken over by people who did not grow up in Napa and they don't share the same memories as those of us who did. So sad.

My mother in law went there, as did my wife's best friend. Too much of Napa history being swept away (in this case, Jackhammered). Let someone (group) remember and relocate if the political elite in school administration continue on their path.

Clas sof '63. My understanding is that the Wappo people do not support the elimination of the Indian mascot name. It is also my understanding that the board has not bothered to consult with them, the main Indian tribe that originally inhabited the Napa Valley. Before any action is taken, such consultation should be carried out.

I graduated from NHS in 1989. The Napa Indian mascot is ingrained in my memory as a symbol of respect for the tribe after which it is named. How has a word that instilled pride in so many become a victim of Political Correctness?
Being a Napa Indian didn't only mean clean sweeps at football games, music festivals, and every other activity our students put their minds, hearts, and bodies into; it also meant learning about the local tribes' heritage, which I remember vividly from many field trips, lectures, and book reports. That should be considered a GOOD thing, honoring our Native heritage, not disparaging it.
As a community, we can turn this PC mess into a positive thing by choosing to keep our Napa High Indian heritage intact, while renewing our commitment to honor and respect the Napa tribe through education of NHS students and the community of Napa.
