In a time where inclusion and opportunity for all is such an important aspect of adolescent years transitioning into adulthood, it’s 100% unacceptable that the school committee is looking to remove one of the most diverse and accepting departments in the school system. Theater is a path to acceptance for some, confidence building for others, and inclusion for all. Scholarships may be lost...grants may be throw out...students lives may be irreparably changed without the opportunity to have the theater for a creative outlet.

Historically, cutting the arts has never solved the real problem at hand. It is only a band aid. Please figure out a better solution.

As a theatre educator, I’ve seen first hand the dire need and important role theatre arts provides for children especially in their teenage years. It can be life saving for some.

This is absolutely idiotic. Theater is a sanctuary for so many people, whether you work behind the scenes or on the stage, or if you are an audience member. COVID-19 has made the need for an escape even more real. Taking away that chance to express oneself and escape the horrors of everyday life is a deplorable action that no one should stand for.

My happy place was always getting to go to my acting class at Mt Hope. It was my safe space to freely be myself where everyone was just like me. That’s the place where I had made so many friends to this day. Theatre is an art and it is so so important to keep the arts alive and a part of education because it teaches expression, it invigorates minds and souls and it’s truly a place of love and creativity and passion. Art heals. Theatre heals. So please, I am begging you, keep theatre at Mt Hope. Getting to rehearse a production, the process, the hard work that these kids put into their craft, seeing the end result and relishing and reminiscing in it. Seeing kids happy to do what THEY WANT TO DO makes it SO EXTREMELY worth it. Love and positivity and kindness to all. xo Sarah Brule

Theatre is community and a place of acceptance for the oft unaccepted. Theatre is mental health help and suicide prevention. Theatre is a teacher of valuable life skills such as public speaking and teamwork. You can't take theatre out of schools any more than you could take out math or English. Cutting the theatre department means that students will suffer. Without expression, what are we? I stand with these students and all students who have lost their sanctuary to senseless cuts like this one.

I spent so much time in that theatre from the day I stepped foot in the high school. It was my home away from home for those 4 years. I went on to minor in theatre in college and being a part of those productions meant so much to me! My children are in BWRSD and they NEED this program too!

I’m in eight grade this year and the thing I am the most excited for going into high school is being able to join the Masqueraders. All of the hard work tons of people have put into this is being ripped away from them which is terrible. There is no reason this should be getting taken away from them and future people.
