Middle schools are really important in cities. Students at this critical life stage need school communities where they can feel like family - like the McCormack School is. Please do not close this school.

I was very privileged to have had the opportunity to intern at McCormack Middle School during the 2017-2018 school year. As a first year graduate student, I was unsure of what to expect, but I quickly found a welcoming, caring and affirming community at McCormack. The students, staff and administration are all truly incredible people working hard to create a supportive learning environment. Also, McCormack Middle School has one of the most developed Restorative Justice Programs I have seen within the Boston Public School system. McCormack is an integral part of BPS and the Dorchester community and I ask that you reconsider closing the school.

Schools are vital and formative communities for their students, and should not be closed without very good reason. And by that I mean that they are not serving and honoring their students properly, which does not seem like the issue in this case. We should never close schools because they are somehow less convenient for our needs, and certainly not because of underfunding. I urge you to strongly reconsider this choice, and feel that school communities and teacher bodies should be a lot more involved in these decisions.

McCormack is the most special school I’ve ever seen/experienced. The culture fostered by every adult and student and visitor is one of love, respect, and academic rigor. The students thrive because they are valued. If BPS truly has the student’s best interest in mind, they would reconsider closing a school as important and established at the McCormack.
