The Gangwon Office of Education finally backed down and reversed their plan to cut the GIEI coordinators. This win proves that they cannot just strip away our support systems without a fight. We won this round, but stay sharp to ensure this position remains fully protected.

We, the EPIK teachers of Gangwon province, have been informed of the upcoming plan to remove the District Coordinator position. We strongly feel that this is a mistake and want to demonstrate the duties that this role performs, and what would be lost in removing it.
강원도 원어민보조교사인 우리는 지역 원어민 코디네이터 제도를 제거할 계획에 통보를 받았습니다. 우리 입장에서 보면, 그 계획을 실행하면 실수가 될 것이므로 원어민 코디네이터만이 수행할 수 있는 기능과 역할을 아래에 열거합니다.
- They are a central source of information distribution in the district.
- 지역 코디네이터는 중요한 정보 근원입니다.
- They coordinate local events, workshops, and trainings
- 지역 이벤트, 워크숍, 훈련 등을 베풀어 줍니다.
- They serve as a mediator for issues arising with schools, housing, other teachers (EPIK and Korean), etc.
- 원어민 보조교사와 학교, 집주인, 혹은 다른 교사 사이에 문제가 생긴다면 지역 코디네이터는 중재인 역할을 해 줍니다.
- A source of connection for local teachers (existing and new)
- 같은 지역에 사는 보조교사들을 서로 소개해 줍니다.
- They assist with foreign integration into the community.

While this list is not exhaustive, we feel that the role of the District Coordinator is vital to the daily life of EPIK teachers, and that removal of the position would greatly affect the retention of foreign teachers. The following is a list of teachers, both Korean and foreign, who agree that it would be extremely valuable to maintain this position for the foreseeable future.

The administration in Gangwon is finally starting to feel the heat because of this overwhelming wave of support. They thought they could slash these vital positions without anyone noticing but they were dead wrong.

I taught in South Korea, Gangwon-do for 3 years. My co-ordinators were valuable assets during my stay and helped me with adjusting to the country as well as navigating more situations. It would be a great loss to the programme if this position was removed.
Area Coordinators are essential to maintaining working relationships with the EPIK teachers qnd their coworkers. Without them, there would be very high turnover because most Native English Teachers often feel discriminated against, left out and ignored in the workforce.
The district coordinator is an important decision. Getting rid of that position is a very poor decision and it also tells EPIK teachers that you don't care, as you never communicated this to a single one of us before doing it. I'm strongly against your decision and implore that you save the coordinator position.
Coordinators are very important and helpful to all EPIK teachers as well as Korean co-teachers. It's common to hear important information from coordinators before Korean co-teachers even receive the information, and sometimes the Korean co-teachers might be too busy and forget to pass on the info.
I think it serves the program in Gangwon Province to maintain the Coordinator positions. The province is significantly rural & that requires an intentional effort to help new & already placed EPIK teachers to adjust & adapt. Coordinators are a very important part to the social & professional adjustment of those placed in the province.
Please make the right decision to keep in place.

Since we don’t have a union. The coordinators are the only ones looking out for the best interest and safety of NES teachers. Without them the schools would take advantage of their teachers without fear of repercussions.
