It is not fair to take something so important away from the students. My niece is in the program and she deserves to have her dance room especially because she is making a career out of dance.

I graduated in 2014 and I was a cheerleader, the 2012-2013 season is when we most recently got the room to practice in next to the main gym. I understand how difficult it is to find space for everyone or having to share it with others. I could only imagine trying to practice and preform for a grade instead of an extracurricular. The dance program at Terry Sanford is a viable acedimic class. The wrestling team has taken over their educational space. Dancers should be able to move freely in their own class room with out the errors of running into mats or diseases. The school would never take the theater away, or they would never tell the football team they couldn't use their locker room. The school has many other and bigger places the wrestling team can practice. Although dance is an elective two arts are required to graduate. School comes before extra circulars.

I am a dancer and completely understand the importance of a proper area to rehurse in. With the wrestling using the area for practice and dimantling the room, you are telling the kids that dance is not important and sports like wrestling take priority over them. Dancers have to dance bare foot in a room that now mats with nasty germs rolled onto the floor. Although the mats are rolled up into the corner when done, they are taking up to much of the room area. Dance and the arts are just as important as sports and should have the proper practice areas equipt with barres.

Used this room during my time as a Varsity Cheerleader for FTS. It is a great space for a small dance class and very valuable to the enrichment of these students.

There are other extra rooms that they can use that are bigger than the dance room. This is not fair to the dancers whose room is already not large enough.

I don't go to FTS, but I've used this room for dancing with my teacher, that is shared with FTS's dance program. It's a beautiful room and I hate to see it not being used by dancers. Dance has taught me so much about myself and I wish everyone had the opportunity to take dance. Unfortunately that is not the case when there is no place for the arts.

My daughter is a junior @ FTS. I am petitioning for the dance classroom to be restored back to a functional "studio style" classroom. My daughter dances competitively and had wanted to be in the dance class but it would not fit into her schedule. Dance is an important part of our family and feel that dance has more to offer than people may understand: The reasons to restore the classroom (may be long) are:
1. Never under estimate the art of dance. Dance takes skill and in order to learn the art of dance-A dancer needs the ability to stretch, warm-up and practice technique. This requires a setting that has the proper equipment to accomplish this task.
2. Safety. Without the proper equipment (barres, mirrors, etc...) a dancer cannot warm-up, stretch or practice. Without the ability to complete this task-the dancer is at high risk for injury (sprains/breaks).
3. Dance is the same as sport team. In a classroom setting-dance would be compared to any other sport (football, wrestling etc...) Dance teaches a person about teamwork, leadership, self confidence and a sense of pride/accomplishment. My daughter has learned more about life, people and herself over the last 10 years of dance than she has learned in an academic classroom
4. Administrative Support. The students of FTS need to know that their administration, teachers and staff support their dance program. To take away the dance classroom tells a student that you do not care about them and another sport or program is more important.
5. School Spirit: When a student becomes discouraged from lack of support by administration/teachers and staff their morale goes down-then it is a trickle effect with more students not wanting to support the school in any type of event.
6. Motivation: Art programs such as dance, band and music-allow a student the opportunity to grow beyond academics to find their personality style/interest and have a sense of relaxation in a stress free setting.

when I was a cheerleader at FTS the wrestlers and other teams (soccer, etc) took our mats and used them. I was on the team when we got the new mats my sophomore year, and they have since been treated badly by the other teams. Cheerleading mats being taken and used by other sports is rude and disrespectful. This situation with the wrestling mats in the dance room is similar. FTS needs to show support for the dance program and make the wrestlers remove their mats from the dance room. I think the administration at FTS turns a blind eye to issues like this because they think the other sports are more important and should therefore take priority, which is not the case.

I'm a competitive dancer,but I don't take dance at school. However it is disappointing to hear what FTS has done.How can you practice without the proper room or equipment? Not only does dance teach you more about yourself, it teaches you about leadership, and how to be a part of a team, preparing you for the reality of your future more than any class at FTS. Many girls go because they love dancing, maybe it gives them a chance to escape the stress in their lives. FTS has done just fine with wrestling in a different location for so many years, why a change? Give these girls their room back!

I honestly hated my high school experience at Terry Sanford because of the lack of focus or caring on the arts. I can't believe they are still finding more ways to discourage students from self expression.
