Why does the state park system exist, if not to preserve important historical landmarks like the Empire Mine? Certainly, Senators with no connection to the place, and no real regard for the history, will point out that the mine doesn't bring in the kind of revenue (in the form of camping reservations, usage fees, etc.) that other parks do, however, it's a dangerous precedent to determine what landmarks are worthy of preservation based on their monetization. Given the amount of money the state squanders (or simply loses track of, like the $52 million the state parks system recently lost, then found), it's insulting to me as a taxpayer that the state is threatening important historical sites on the basis that they aren't making enough money.

Save Empire Mine! My sister had her wedding here. Empire Mine is one of the best preserved gold rush relics anywhere in California.

Don't sell this place! It is a beautiful piece of California history, and a key tourist destination for the region. Also the site of my wedding - let other couples have beautiful weddings here!

We need more state parks and better preservation of historic sites. Private ownership will result in destruction or limited access by the general public. All of us share in the cost of the park system. It is a lot cheaper for the individual than trying to support your favorite place through a Friends group.
