Please save the DOT support for the McCarthy Rd. I will be traveling their this summer on vacation for the first time so roads should be maintained for us tourists that do visit every year and do want to come back time after time.

As someone who was born and raised in McCarthy, I know from experience that the vigilant upkeep of this stretch of road (as small as it may seem) is vital to the safety of the residents and thousands of tourists who travel it during the tourist season.
Please take into consideration the sincere gravity of this beloved road before making a rash spending cut.

The McCarthy Road is a necessary attribute to a community and people surrounded by 13.2 million acres of wilderness both as residents, community members and tourists alike. It is a lifeline of support that once brought out of the tenors of railroad history into modern 21st century era with upgrades, widening of curves, clearing of lanes, chip sealing, continual grading etc. all of which became the expected and new normal. The State of Alaska in all its splendor cannot even in its dismal fiscal light let go of the Chitna DOT station and the support the crew offers the road. Peel back the onion, run the pig around the circus ring to reduce fat in other places where there is excess.
The road is important for livelihoods of people some who may stay year round, businesses who need support and exposure for those from afar who contribute to the rural economy or others who may visit on occasion just to get a breath of fresh air. For certain, let's move forward not backwards, otherwise what on earth is the reason to even bother repairing the Lakina bridge?

One important reason for keeping funding for Chitina DOT workers and machinery is the timely response Chitna station can provide when there is a rock/mud slide 1 mile at start of road on the Kotsina Bluffs thus closing the road to residents living on road and in McCarthy and Kennicott. A dangerous slide fell and blocked road last summer and have happened in past. Residents need a safe road!

I worked a summer for the Kennicott Glacier Lodge. Tourism is a chief if not the chief industry in this area. Keeping roads and transportation in good condition is the best way to keep up the industry and make the Wrangells a good place to visit!

I've driven to McCarthy for over 25 years and the road this summer was the worst I've seen. I had to lead several tourists who had stopped and were afraid to drive. My broke shocks and u joints were a headache bonus.
Once the word is out that the road is dangerous, tourism will fall off dramatically. My little B&B business will suffer. It's just simple math.

Closing the Chitina Station would have a dramatic effect on the residents of McCarthy, Kennicott area. The availability of supplies, medical care and the livelihood of local businesses would be severely impacted. Not to mention under certain conditions the area could be placed in an emergency situation that having a passable road would elevate. During the summer months this area brings in a lot of revenue to the state of Alaska which would also be affected.

Most of the income at the non-profit McCarthy - Kennicott Museum comes from tourists. We could not keep the place open if people quit coming down the road.

I have been a resident and business owner of McCarthy for over 25 years and have noticed the work that has been done by the Chitna station over the years. The work is always been timely and cost-effective because the crew is close to their work area . Closing down the Chitna station will require a longer response time and time being spent traveling rather than working . From my perspective as a business owner and my observation of the work accomplished by the station I do not think it would be cost-effective to close the station . The station has maintained lots of road miles and done it very effectively.

The Community located in and near the WSENP need to maintain access to this amazing natural preserve and park. we need to continue to show off our amazing history and continue to build the destination that is the McCarthy Kennicott Valley! We need to do this by maintaining the McCarthy road and keeping the DOT station open in Chitina!

My family travels there twice a year in the to visit friends and enjoy the beauty and quiet of the area. If the road is not kept up, then out trips and those of many others will not take place or be diminished. Not to mentioned how the folks that live there or have cabins will be able to get goods and supplies. Cut your salaries and fringes not the road upkeep.

I think that the travel times from Tazlina will not allow as much time to be spent actually doing maintenence on the road.

As a born and raised Kenny Lake AK resident, I have extensive experience driving this road. I live in Anchorage now, but since my family still lives there, I drive the road to Chitina many times throughout the year. I know many people in Anchorage who also drive the road all the way to McCarthy for tourism purposes in the summer and even more that travel to Chitina. I know how dangerous the road can get during the harsh Alaskan winters if it is not maintained. I'm not afraid to drive it in the winter right now because it is maintained, but if the State cuts the Chitina DOT Camp, that road will no longer be safe. As for the McCarthy Road, it will quickly fall into disrepair and hurt the tourism industry which helps keep our state alive. Cutting the Chitina Camp decreases the safety of Alaska residents, and decreases the financial boost the tourism industry gives our state.
