Save the Character Homes of Albion

Save them

I grew up in a house like the Albion houses. It was the best way to live. Leave them alone!

Albion and its surrounding suburbs have been recently inundated with ugly cheap high density units. They are being built for a quick profit with no interest in making these communities beautiful and interesting places to live in. Please stop the destruction of beautiful old homes and stop the progression of ugly high density dwellings. The infrastructure of these suburbs is now over saturation point and the continuing development is destroying these communities and making them unlivable.

These homes form part of our heritage and is an important integral part of the Brisbane landscape. We need to save these types of buildings or they will be lost forever to future generations.

What a shame

I own 3 properties beside this monster and have voiced all my concerns on the council web site and despite numerous offers to meet on site to show them first hand the impact this development will have on my properties and surrounding properties. I have not got a response. Not even the curtesy of a letter or the offer of a meeting. The council has no issue increasing my rates every year though. Good luck

What a shame! These are beautiful homes.

Character homes should be kept as just that, the current wave of over development in Brisbane needs to be curbed. Sure Brisbane needs to accommodate more people moving forward, but building poorly made and designed apartment block is a blunt, poorly thought out solution which only benefits developers, not residence or the local neighbourhood.

This overbearing development will dwarf the surrounding single dwelling houses, severely impacting privacy, and causing noise and light pollution... not to mention the insufficient allocated parking for residents cars and no space allocated for rubbish bins. We are over this Brisbane City Council!

The homes need to be saved to preserve the character and history and story of these areas.

Brisbane City Council should be supporting the restoration and repair of our culturally and historically significant local architecture and neighbourhoods. Allowing developers to remove, erase and replace with ill performing, poorly designed multiple dwellings just further perpetuates our current throwaway, waste culture. These houses are valuable and should be enjoyed by our community for generations to come!

It is vital to conserve our historical architecture for the benefit of existing and future generations.

Stop destroying our suburb. Stop allowing splitting blocks where people can hear each other persons there is no green space. Stop building bloody units if you want to live like that move to bloody west end...

So much of what made Brisbane such a beautiful city has been lost already.

Keep character in our community. Our environment helps us experience beauty.

BCC has for some time been content to allow developers to remove houses with historical local characteristics - i.e. timber and tin, veranda's, raised on posts - and replace them with oversized concrete slabs with no character at all. Quite often next to houses that have all of these characteristics, plus restrictions on their development due to their age. Apart from being visually ugly and incongruous with the surrounding architecture, the new dwellings often have no real capacity for natural lighting, ventilation or drainage - but impact on those aspects of the neighbouring properties - as they cram so much in to so little space. Sure they are compliant on paper, but that's about it. This adds to the cost of living by requiring increased internal lighting and air-conditioning which also has impacts for the environment. And then there is the inevitable issue of lack of parking spaces within the development and its effect on the street. Council hides behind the "transport hub" nature of the local area as an answer to this. "No one will need a car because of the presence of the train/bus/ferry services" they say. They obviously don't live in Brisbane because everyone knows that unless you want to go in a linear direction into or out of town, public transport isn't worth two squirts. Hence, there are regularly more than one vehicle to a residence - quickly overcrowding the streets. Sadly, it's nothing new.

Shame on you Brisbane city council!

Albion has lost a number of key historical, landmark sites. We must be careful to strike the right balance so that we do not lose the historical charm of the suburb. These Albion houses should remain in Albion - with development to occur elsewhere on the block. This kind of development has successfully occurred elsewhere in the suburb.
