The businesses in the Balsamo Warehouse on Orr Street need your help. The City of Columbia is proposing a relocation of the Wabash Compactor/Recyling containers to the Beach Salon Adopt-A-Spot green space. This will eliminate parking which is already limited in this area, have potential safety issues, the North Village Arts District aesthetics will change, it will be a concern for pedestrians and cyclists using the historic bike lane and the evening events on Orr street will be impacted negatively along with all the businesses on Orr Street. Please help.
I have requested a formal meeting with the city planning department to review the impact of the compactor relocation on our parking and pedestrian safety. We are currently preparing a comprehensive briefing document that outlines the specific issues this move creates for the North Village Arts District. I expect to hear back regarding a site visit soon.

The increase in support has captured the attention of local planning officials. I have requested a formal meeting with the City Manager to discuss the impact of moving this compactor to the Orr Street green space.

There is already no parking and there are some questionable folks around. Making folks park further away to visit those businesses also puts them in danger!

Whenever I’m in that area of town I love looking at the little garden. It’s always a quick reminder of life in the middle of the city.

How is it that The Beach Salon Hair Sylists’ can lose their parking when they pay a more than reasonable fee for their parking area? Especially without even being considered in the decision to yak it away!!!

I am a customer of The Beach Salon. They have very limited parking and the addition of a recycling receptical would not only take up valued space, it would be a true detriment to the aesthetic appeal to the salon.

As a small business owner in the District I know the challenge of parking for patrons. The “District” has done such a wonderful job of building up the arts district. It would be such a shame to do this to the business owners of this area. The dumpsters are not only eye soarers but are disgusting and create a habitat for rodents and horrible aroma. They are made for the alley ways. Do better than this!

The parking is already so limited in this area it doesn’t make any sense to trade 4 valuable spaces that are used for patrons of businesses for a trash/recycle area that will only hurt the surrounding business. It will decrease safety by being obstacle to auto, bicycle and pedestrian traffic. The loss of the adopt a spot to the trash/recycle area will also be damaging since you’re trading a natural/green space for an eye sore. Who is going to haul their trash and recycling to this location? There’s no safe place to unload without blocking traffic or parking. It’s just a terrible idea all around.
