The fact St. Elizabeth’s is the home to the deaf community of the entire Archdiocese of New York, providing services to a most deserving group should be more than ample reason to find a way to keep this church open and not close it's doors. Please reconsider your decision for the sake of all your parishioners.

The services that St Elizabeth of Hungary Churchprobides for the deaf and hard of hearing community are invaluable. As the parent of ahead of hearing, hearing aid wearing, adult child I cannot thank you enough. For my child to continue attending services, she needs to hear and therefore develop an understanding of her faith. Not all churches are mindful of the needs of the hearing impaired community. The acousticsof churches is poor and amplification is not enough. Thank you St. Elizabethsand Father McCahill

Here is an excerpt from a letter that I recently mailed to Cardinal Dolan:
I exhort Your Eminence, as Archbishop of New York, to reconsider the decision to close St. Elizabeth of Hungary. I first read about the case from a New York Times article entitled, “On the Upper East Side, Silent Prayers to Save a Sanctuary for the Deaf” (Nov. 28, 2014). I was greatly distressed after reading the article because I could not understand why the archdiocese would overlook the special ministry that St. Elizabeth’s provides for its Deaf parishioners, or at least that was how it was portrayed.
After reading further on the archdiocese’s website about its plan to merge a number of parishes, I realized that the archdiocese’s decision was not arbitrary, but had gone through careful, detailed consideration under a very comprehensive, multi-year, pastoral planning process called Making All Things New in order for the archdiocese to serve its people more effectively with the resources it has. As one of the leaders of this initiative and shepherd of the archdiocese, Your Eminence acknowledged that the transition will be difficult and even hurtful for numerous parishioners, that you understand and accept responsibility for this, and that much will be done to help those people acclimate to this transition.
Your Eminence, I would like to suggest, however, that St. Elizabeth of Hungary is an exception. It has a special ministry to the Deaf community in New York City, and that is something which needs to be considered very seriously because ministry to people on the margins is a crucial element of the Church’s mission on earth. While I understand that closure of St. Elizabeth of Hungary does not signify eradication of the archdiocese’s ministry to the Deaf community, Your Eminence must be aware that there are very few churches like St. Elizabeth of Hungary that can fully accommodate the needs of the Deaf community.
