Although I am not a Williamstown resident, I have witnessed firsthand the slow encroachment of the MCLA campus on my historic neighborhood in North Adams and fear that it too will continue gobbling up and tearing down beautiful old homes and redefining quaint residential neighborhoods. These two colleges need to do a very thorough job of protecting their surrounding neighborhoods while creating the college campuses of the future.

Please leave Southworth Street as a residential street. The college has plenty of other directions and places for expansion. (I am both a Williams alumna and a town resident, with a child at the elementary school.)

The Stetson-Sawyer project created huge light pollution in my neighborhood along Southworth St.
The College is acting as a bad neighbor. I no longer trust it with further construction in this residential area.

I am part of the Art department at Williams. I am also an artist who loves museums, and have been looking very closely at this project. While the art history wing is in clear need of new, up-to-date classrooms and more space (and that should be a priority), I am not convinced that the college has need of an entirely new museum. More open discussion should be had on this topic.

We are strongly opposed not only to the Southworth site, but also to the unilateral way in which it was proposed. From what I understand, even the members of the Art Department are not unanimous in their support of the expansion plans. A great deal more discussion needs to happen before this project can become legitimate.

The site of the old town garage on Water Street is very close to the museum and not attractive. A well designed building on that site could enhance Water Street. It could help the businesses that are currently on the street.

Southworth Street is the street which children in elementary school walk on when they go to school. It is a safe street right now. The museum on that street will change that. There will be more pedestrian and vehicular traffic. Williams should keep the safety of the youngest members of our community a priority.

Our in-town residential neighborhoods are a premium housing option (just ask the president of the college). Everything should be done to preserve as many of these houses as possible and the unique residential quality of the area that surrounds the campus. Signers have highlighted the reasons to look elsewhere while offering alternative locations for this project. Williams, please listen and work with towns' people.... and look at other locations.

Even though we are townies with no affiliation with the college, we recognize its place and importance in the life of our town. However we deplore its facility to expand without regards to the common people who live here and support the town by paying our taxes which educational entities and churches do not pay.
