The performer interest in DCI Snare Drum I&E has been declining rapidly in recent years. Many past performers and winners are worried the snare solo will become a lost art. Given recent rule changes, and timing and logistical concerns, some people have come to the conclusion that the day after the San Antonio regional is no longer the best choice for "Snare Drum Individuals" to take place. A recent discussion started on the Facebook page DCI Snares by Rick Beckham, 4-time DCA snare champion, led to the idea that there is still flourishing interest in solo competitions despite the declining numbers of participants over the summer. As such, the undersigned propose the following:
(1) The Snare Drum solo competition be moved from under the purview of Drum Corps International.
(2) The date of the competition is moved to coincide with WGI Percussion finals. (Perhaps Friday, during concert class finals, where there is most likely going to be the least amount of conflict between performers and competition.)
(3) The move will result in far more interest from potential competitors, as well as fans.
(4) That there be no age limit for participation - while WGI will host the competition, the age limit for participation in WGI will not be in place for the snare solo competition.
(5) Based on "(4)", participants would be allowed to represent an indoor line, a DCI corps, DCA corps, or themselves.
(6) To ensure financial feasibility, WGI shall charge a modest admission fee (but keep it cheap enough so it does not discourage attendance).
