It's really sad that residents have to fight so hard to preserve what is vital to the health and beauty of our city. It shouldn't be that way.

Watching that clip of the City Council meeting, it becomes apparent that at least one councilmember mistakenly thinks that it is only those with historic homes who want to celebrate the vision Ole Hanson had for San Clemente. Not so. Most residents love that they live in a unique city with a distinctive history and know that it increases both property values and prosperity for the town. Sadly, Bob Baker just doesn't get it.

Don't be short sighted. These tiles contribute to making San Clemente the unique town that many residents moved here for. It's this charm that keeps visitors and new residents coming.

As a 30+ year resident of SC, the little things like the sidewalks and roofs are what sets out town apart from the surrounding cities and other beach towns. Let's keep it that way.

No matter what you do, or how you do it, everything you do through life leaves a little footprint, and that's your legacy. Let's make sure that the San Clemente City Council doesn't storm troop with heavy careless boots on our common heritage, and historical legacy and insist that they tread lightly and continue to protect our historic sidewalks!

Founder Ole Hanson constructed over 6 miles of these red tile sidewalks in the late 1920s, and they were an integral part of his Spanish Village vision. A few years ago, the sidewalks were recommended for the City's official Designated Historic Resources List by the prestigious Historic Resources Group of Pasadena.

We are custodians of our community's history. We owe it to future generations to preserve our history. And California Law requires it.
