As the oil spill off Santa Barbara in 1969 resulted in environmental devastation and spawned the call for national marine sanctuaries, tragically an oil spill on May 19, 2015 in the same region has prompted a call for both emergency and long term protection from the threats associated with off-shore oil drilling.
National marine sanctuaries are established to protect areas that encompass unique significant natural and cultural resources. Each sanctuary is a unique place needing special protections.
Designation of the proposed Chumash Heritage National Marine Sanctuary will ensure protection of one of the most culturally and biologically diverse coastlines anywhere in the world. These waters are essential to the heritage of the Chumash, one of the few ocean-going bands among the First People of the Pacific Coast. Home to abundant marine wildlife flora and fauna, the region is an essential migratory pathway and transition zone for underwater habitats. The marine environment also provides a very special sense of place to coastal communities and international visitors because of the significant historic, archaeological, cultural, aesthetic and biological resources found here.
The proposed sanctuary would protect underwater ecosystems, would be free to access and open to commercial and recreational fishing, diving, surfing, swimming, wildlife viewing, kayaking, tide pooling, photography and much more.
The nomination proposal calls for protection by
- Prohibition of future oil and gas development
- Prohibition of harmful discharges into sanctuary waters
- Prohibition of seismic acoustic blasting
- Prohibition of seabed floor disturbance

Seeing the momentum behind this proposal is completely overwhelming and honestly quite humbling. None of this growth would have happened without the passion you have all brought to this effort. Thank you for pushing this forward in a way I never thought possible.

The Marine Sanctuary makes good sense for SLO and Santa Barbara counties. I look forward to the time when we can be assured that our coast and marine wildlife are protected by the creation of the sanctuary.
I support the Chumash Heritage National Marine Sanctuary nomination. Just like Monterrey and the Channel Islands have done, it's time for permanent protection for the central coast here in San Luis Obispo county. Recently I watched the documentary “Big Blue Live” and that should be what the San Luis Obispo area is like as well (see http://www.pbs.org/big-blue-live/social-hub/). Sanctuaries are good for our coastal economy, including fishing as oil is not good for that industry. Support the nomination and give our communities a chance to have this discussion!
This is a wonderful effort to keep oil drilling out of our local waters, where whales travel with their new calves, dolphins and otters swim ... a Marine Sanctuary! Most welcome and needing support from each one of us!
I don't know why we have to keep doing this every 20 or 30 years, this is the second time as a California resident I have signed to stop offshore drilling in these CA areas.
Our California central coast communities have long supported protection of the beautiful natural resources of our coastline and ocean. Our local economies depend on protecting the habitat that provides food, clean water, jobs and a healthy environment for our families, our neighbors and our visitors.

The central coast is already a sanctuary to the many animals who call it home. It's long past time to treat it as a sanctuary under the law. Please protect this fragile natural treasure.
