Perhaps some of the thousands of dollars being spent on excessive street graffiti in support of bicycle safety and traffic calming could b e better spent repairing and resetting the brick sidewalks.
If there is money for stupid excessive street painting then there must be money for brick sidewalks.

Brick is the historically appropriate material for sidewalks in the historic districts of Salem. In addition to being aesthetically pleasing, brick is the correct choice for environmental reasons because it is permeable, unlike asphalt and concrete.

Once the initial investment is made in a brick sidewalk, it is relatively easy and inexpensive to maintain, unlike asphalt and concrete , which are not as “green” nor as durable. Aesthetically brick sidewalks make our city beautiful and once they are made safe again, everyone will appreciate them.
