Pu’uiki Cemetery is a beautiful, historic, peaceful sanctuary. It is part of our heritage in Hawaii and gives us a way to honor and remember our ancestors from the plantation era whose labor in the fields helped to shape our future. This special place must be preserved and protected from development that would mar its serenity.

I come to the cemetery to visit my great great grandma, and one of the uncle’s who volunteers there said that the cemetery used to be much larger before than it is now. Uncle told me that much of the area they’re doing construction on right now used to be part of the cemetery — aʻole pono.

Cemeteries are such a vital part of our communities’ history. They tell us about who has lived here, what religion they were, significant health issues faced, etc. This small one is a hidden gem and should not be subjected to encroaching development.
