Leicester’s crazy proposal to abolish Pure Math research lost then 20 top notch mathematicians at least half finding excellent positions elsewhere. Now they want to get rid of the remaining 8 replacing the entire department by three teachers. I suggest they call themselves a technical training college. Joseph

The proposal from Leicester is nonsensical. None of their goals work without pure mathematics research.

Pure math is needed for later applications -- just look at number theory and cryptography!

The pure mathematics department at UoL was crucial to my education and inspired me to peruse a PhD in pure mathematics after my undergraduate degree. It is outrageous that the university would want to stifle the quality and breadth of academic research at the university.

Canning pure maths? In 2021? That is a bizarre thing to try.

This is outrageous and ill-informed. It is a decision that will harm both the faculty and the institution itself.
