Higher education is about furthering knowledge and having a positive impact on the society. Whilst having a competitive strategy is vital for Universities in the current socio-economic climate, I feel that we must not forget that what got the HE institutions to where they are today is fundamental research into mathematics and sciences. Ceasing research into pure mathematics appears to be a money-driven strategy to gain short/medium-term competitive advantage, which would be understandable if Universities were businesses. Please reconsider.

It takes minutes to destroy and years to build. In the end, Leicester will find itself trying to re-establish a department they destroyed, at higher cost and lesser quality. Think first, think far, then act.
