The University of Leicester has officially reversed its decision regarding the proposed redundancies in the mathematics department. I appreciate the steadfast resolve shown by the 382 individuals who supported this cause. We will continue to monitor the department to ensure that these commitments remain firm.

Without a proper Department of Mathematics, U. Leicester will become a trade school, rather than a university. Perhaps that is the intent, in which case, might not Ofsted take a dim view of the project?

I would hope that BMC and BAMC would spontaneously issue a statement condemning the redundancies, irrespective of this petition. These redundancies are not in the interest of the UK mathematics communities (pure or applied). They are also not in the interest of the University of Leicester, nor of society at large.

Even in terms of corporate strategy (refocusing on IT) it’s a dumb move at Leicester, where the pure maths research has historically strong links with computer science.

As a working software engineer and mathematician, I can assure the University that free things are more detrimental to the advance of AI and machine learning than the decision to cease research in pure mathematics. This choice is at best misguided, at worst malicious, and only serves to hinder progress in stated areas.

Leicester’s crazy proposal to abolish Pure Math research lost then 20 top notch mathematicians at least half finding excellent positions elsewhere. Now they want to get rid of the remaining 8 replacing the entire department by three teachers. I suggest they call themselves a technical training college. Joseph

The pure mathematics department at UoL was crucial to my education and inspired me to peruse a PhD in pure mathematics after my undergraduate degree. It is outrageous that the university would want to stifle the quality and breadth of academic research at the university.

A university without a real mathematics department is not a university.
