Subject: Urgent: Halt Closure of Preston High School
Dear Attorney General Letitia James,
I am writing to you as a concerned New Yorker and friend of Preston High School, who believes that the future of our great state depends on the educational well-being of our young people. I am concerned about the impending closure and sale of Preston. Respectfully, I request that you take immediate action to halt the closure and sale of this vital institution, a lifeline for young women in the Bronx who must persevere to reach their dreams.
The Sisters of the Divine Compassion (RDC) and their close associates (which includes a family member) exclusively comprise the Board of Directors. The complete lack of notice and consultation with students, parents, faculty, staff, and the community are unacceptable. To abruptly close the school is an affront to the students and families who have placed their trust in this institution.
Equally concerning is the disregard for Preston’s positive enrollment and fiscal position that demonstrates Preston’s continued viability.
I urge you to intervene immediately to halt the closure and sale of Preston High School and to demand a more transparent, community-inclusive process moving forward. The future of our students, the future of the Bronx, and the future of young women in New York must not be sacrificed without a thoughtful review of all the options.
Thank you for your time and consideration. I trust you will act swiftly to protect our girls’ education and the future of our community.
Sincerely,
Elizabeth Villegas
