Speed limit signs do not work. What works is configuring the roads to make drivers feel unsafe if they drive too fast. I recommend that you read "Walkable City: How Downtown Can Save America, One Step at a Time," by Jeff Speck, a well known urban planner (my son) . Focus especially on the chapter headed "The Safe Walk".

I like the idea of a T intersection. Would be opposed to a traffic light, because it's only at two rush hours that there is an issue.

The level of cut through traffic from 128 is untenable and unsafe for scholl children walking, abutters and other residents. The cut through traffice also leads to traffic jams and problems for pedestrians around the FIske school entrance and the Hancock and Bedford Street intersection.

If we simply made the junction from Hancock onto Adams a true T junction so everyone has to slow down to turn right I think we significantly reduce the problem. Right now we are asking the town to do a study, this is step one in the process. We would also like the town to put a Stop sign on the crosswalk as it is on the books already just hasn't been put up.

I agree. Just to add to list of problem spots-- the corner of Bedford and Hancock (where it meets the Green and the bike path) is dangerous as well. I won't let my kids walk to school because the speed and indifference of the drivers along Hancock. This combined with the fact that the sidewalk is very close to the road and there are no safe crossing over the road make it too risky to send children on foot to school. What a pity-- kids should be able to have a "safe route to school," especially in a town like Lexington.
