Logging this forest for the few dollars it will produce is evil. Not just a little evil, evil to the nth degree. I suspect this petty political retribution for JM's opposition to ruining the paleochannel for a bunch of softball fields.

In plain dollars, scientific research shows the cost-benefit of ecosystem services of a forest like this far outweigh the revenue of logging; typically at a ratio of 100:1. Moreover, these forests and nature are a primary reason people move and invest here, as with the bay, a golf course, a university, or any economic foundation we could build. Except this has built itself, and can not be replaced. It is unspeakably arrogant to think only what we manipulate has dollar and human value. Logging a public tract like this is loosing a tremendous amount of money, quality of life, and wisdom.

I am deeply saddened that the Wicomico County Council made a decision to cut down the 230 acre native forest on the Wicomico River. I have been to this forest many times and it is a special place. As a scientist, I understand the value of contiguous tracts of forest for wildlife preservation that can not exist without it. But the human value of simply experiencing the forest - the sounds, smells, views, and tranquility, can't be replaced by anything. You can't build it. We have an obligation to preserve it for everyone in Wicomico, for now and the future. I object to this decision to cut it down. What happened to putting this to a vote BY THE PEOPLE who own this land. The citizens/taxpayers own this land! Lastly, I am incensed that the 9/11 Memorial trees will be cut down for a one-time profit from timber sales. The people promoting this short-sighted plan should be ashamed of themselves.

Judging from the photographs I have seen, I can only say that this is truly a beautiful forest as well as a home for numerous plants, animals, fungi, etc. This forest should never, ever be logged under any circumstances. It is sad indeed that here in the Eastern United States less than one percent of the original forests is still standing. Not only should these few remaining old-growth forests be strictly preserved, but other forests currently recovering from past logging should be allowed to revert to become old-growth forests. Also, the few remaining stands of old=growth forests should be allowed to expand in size whenever that is possible because larger forests contain more species of organisms as well as larger populations of each species of organism which resides there.

Saving this county owned forest paid with Open Space grant funding is a no-brainer! Unfortunately Wicomico County is currently headed by short sighted, non-public park using, no-brainers.
