Growing up in South Natick I used to play in those very dam waters. Don't take it away from future kids getting up to no good on hot summer days. It's a little gem of Natick. Let's keep our treasures.

Hi Anne! You are unfortunately misinformed and wrong about many things in your comment. I want to point out that algae blooms occur in warmer water, a result of damming the river. Removing the spillway will lower water temperatures, leading to lower likelihood of the blooms.

Natick is my home town and I have a lot of memories there at the dam even now with my kids and I would hate to see it go

The Charles River Dam in south Natick should be repaired, not taken away. For one thing, it would be so much less expensive. For another thing, I see that no studies have been done regarding ecosystem, etc. The Board of Selectmen does not have all the facts. Last but not least, Last but not least, this damn has been in existence for well over 100 years and has not adversely affected the ecosystem; in fact, there are many fish in the area (as attested to by my older brothers, who fished in this area when they were growing up), nice banks surrounding this area (which would be pitiful surrounding a tiny stream by comparison - I mean why bother really… I have seen other sections of the Charles River west of Natick), and housing values are very likely to drop for houses along the Charles in South Natick because people will no longer be able to canoe or kayak along the Charles River in South Natick. Just a few points. I’m sure I have many more.

It seems people may be misunderstanding the point. No one wants to build a new dam. Dams aren’t good for the ecosystem. Fact is, though, There’s been a dam where Natick’s dam is, for 200 - 300 years. The ecosystem has developed, adapted and now thrives there. There are 200 (probably more) species of life that live above & below the dam - that are thriving. Removing the dam will displace , more likely disable or kill most of these species. In MA it is illegal to relocate wildlife from their habitat. Removing the dam = destroy their habitat. This isn’t about kayaking, or relaxing by the falling water. This issue is Much Much Bigger, concerns like what toxic waste we would send downstream toward our water supply? The documented presence of Cyanobacteria (blue green algae). The most insensible part of this is with the drop in water level - fish & other species will not survive in the river above where the dam is now. A new fish ladder is ludicrous. Please think!

Question for the people who created this petition: Is it ethical to change the language of your petition after 900+ people have signed it? The original text said that restoring the dam would require cutting down “a few trees” and now that language is gone. Seems like you lured people in under false pretenses.

So wonderful to hear that you have such great memories of the dam! The good news is that even with dam removal, people will still be able to make new memories there. They might be different, but they can also still be positive and lasting memories.

You must mean our white heritage because the Native Americans were here before the colonists arrived. The opposed the dam then and they still do today. And good news is that the Great Blue Herons and ducks will still be there even if the spillway is removed. And, you can always go down the street to Broadmoor. Lots of both there!

The dam / spillover is an integral part of our community. Our heritage and, with two young (5&6) daughters who come and watch the blue herons and the ducks, our future. It is our responsibility to make the right decision for future generations.

Over the years ground water level of fresh water is decreasing through out the country.
In Natick we are blessed with good ground water level and I believe Dam and Aquafiers plays a big part in doing so.
After Dam is repaired we can always regrow the trees but replenishing ground water is almost impossible once that space is taken over by some other structures and shall have catastrophic impact on future generations.
I would certainly request in favor to save Dam by repairing it.
