The kids in chorus at West are all gay. And they're off pitch at their concerts.

Dr. Wells' comments are right on point. As our young folks grow and become active participants in society, much of the preparation will come from the experiences of their education system. Preparation is much, much more than basic exposure to the 3 R's. Music, in all its forms, plays a vital role in the phases of life in our society. Quality and commitment are vital goals in this preparation. Our young folks can step forward with the interest and enthusiasm to excel, but those who control the purse strings must step forward and match that interest and enthusiasm with commitments to match the talents of our youth.

In agreement with the above comments. Drama and theatre are a wonderful addition to a high school course offering. Chorus isn't just singing, though. Music history and theory are part of a music education. Music encompasses math skills, performance and public speaking skills, as well as teaching proper body mechanics and healthy lifestyles. (It's not fun to be a smoker in a high school chorus. The peer pressure is tough!) it offers students a chance to grow as individuals, tap into their strengths, and shine when their hard work and practice pay off. They develop a sense of community and support each other.

Please save the music program for these talented students, by hiring a qualified chorus teacher

While I am sure the school has no intention of eliminating the Chorus program at WSHS, lack of leadership in the program can have the same effect as students fall away. Students want to be a part of something of quality they can take pride in (Music needs to be one such area) and become developed, well-educated, and culturally mature citizens. If this is the goal, then hiring qualified & dedicated faculty certainly needs to be a priority. - Dr. Wells

Former choral director at WSHS. So glad to hear they have someone with a theatre background teaching the theatre classes (something I failed at), but the choral classes also need an expert in that field teaching the students.

The students I know in the West Stokes choir program are dedicated individuals. They have so much musical potential and I believe that they have what it takes to go above and beyond the chorus classroom.

Music adds some diversity to the "traditional" classes and has been shown to help the brain function better in core classes as well, and produces well rounded young people into society who a lot of times, are better able to think outside of the box because of arts programs like music education

Music is so important. Please don't dismiss this critical area of education.
