Final supporters
My daughter is a senior at West Stokes High School in King, NC. She has been involved in honors chorus all 4 years, and they have been blessed with some very knowledgeable teachers during that time. So much that my daughter has gained a love for music so deep that she wishes to major in music education with a concentration in choral music when she goes to college next year. The honors chorus has received superior ratings every spring when they have performed at festival. However this year, just prior to the school year starting, a new teacher was hired for the choral and theater department whose background is theater only and openly admits she doesn't know music or how to conduct. The choral class is at this point for a lack of a better word, a self taught class. One of the students conducts the choir at concerts... every song, every concert. My fear is that all of the class is filled with seniors who are getting ready to graduate. What will this mean next year and beyond for the students who will have the opportunity to move up to honors chorus, if there even is one at the rate it is going. I feel these students are being done a hugh disservice by having a teacher that is not trained in the area in which she was hired to teach. Please sign my petition and demand that a proper teacher with the proper background and education be hired to take over the chorus program at West Stokes.

I have been hearing from several students who feel completely discouraged by the lack of direction in their daily classes. Seeing them try to lead their own rehearsals is heartbreaking because they deserve so much better than this. I am drafting a formal letter to the district office to demand a meeting about these hiring standards.

Seeing this level of support reminds me that I am not the only one who sees the value in what these students have built. My daughter and her classmates deserve a mentor who understands their craft and respects the work they have poured into this program.

I do not mind her as a theatre arts teacher, but I think that it is unfair to the chorus students who want to learn and become better with there vocals.
I'm a student at WSHS and I'm in another form of art at that school. We art kids are done a huge injustice. When the school has cut backs we are always the 1st one to be hit with them. It really annoys me because they'll say they care about the arts when in reality it doesn't seem like it.
I'm a future music educator and know how important this is to all music students. Best of luck!
West Stokes Choir Alumni Class of 2009 pianist for the choir and helped get the grand piano that is in choir room my class was the first to raise the money we needed for the instrument. It will be a shame for the chorus to go away its been there since the school opened I know that it has been in discussion in past years to cut it but it is still going.
