For the last ten years MT4Uth has provided vital training in Musical Theatre for thousands of young people throughout Northern Ireland and many of its alumni have gone on to the entertainment business which helps to generate a phenomenal income for the country. In 2012, I had the pleasure of guest conducting a live performance of MT4Uth alumni members at the opening ceremony of the Word Police and Fire Games which was relayed throughout the world by the BBC. MT4Uth has never been the recipient of a ridiculously high grant but what it has had has allowed it to give a wealth of experience to all young people and to further develop those who have a special talent in performance. MT4Uth is unique – it needs its £30k. This is small change in the whole equation.

MT4uth is the ONLY beneficial training ground in Northern Ireland for young aspiring artists. It has been a major stepping stone in the lives of a lot of now professional actors from Northern Ireland. Many of whom have been already forced to move elsewhere for sufficient work in the field. The absence of MT4uth in Northern Ireland will evidently cut the option of becoming a professional performer for a lot of people. It would be a great shame as Northern Ireland is full of aspiring talent with no opportunity to grow.

I founded this charity in 2005 with Vernon Mound Prof of Opera and Music Theatre at Gotenburgh University in Sweden but also an International Director of some repute. Vernon and I saw a huge gap in the level of training in music theatre here in Ireland and set about building a sustainable charity to offer this training in all three disciplines of singing, dance and drama. We also saw the opportunity to bring young people out of there communities and meet like minded young people from different cultures and backgrounds. The charity grew day and daily, we produced Musicals in a Weekend across Northern Ireland in partnership with the local theatres eventually moving South as well working with the Gaiety School of Acting and Skerries Youth Theatrel. We attracted young people who loved performance and had heard of the quality of training on offer, they flocked to the projects across the breadth of Ireland. We had very little funding for the first few years and had to work tirelessly to raise the funds to support each project as it happened. We also raised the funds to support young people from social needs backgrounds to take part who had no financial backing to even fund an audition. We went on to represent Northern Ireland by winning the National Lottery Awards, and many other awards throughout the ten years of our existence. In that short time we built a charity to be proud of through hard work, discipline, voluntary support and goodwill of so many and most importantly a wonderful artistic team who gave of their time to nurture our Irish , keeping their feet firmly planted on the ground as to how difficult a career path the performing arts was. We ended up with a Music Theatre 4 Youth family, nurturing, mentoring, building self esteem and belief in themselves and trust in each other. Friendships were made for life and the proof being that those young people are now emerging here on facebook from all over the UK and Ireland in support of this petition.
