I have two stories - relations of mine - who had similar issues - but different resolutions. My brother while in school was bored with class. He was just sitting there hearing things that he knew well, but the other kids were struggling with. He was being held back by his classmates. One teacher was very concerned about his math work - he never turned in homework. The reason - as my mother tried to point out - he is in grade school - and capable of doing math at a 12th grade level according to the tests that they just did. My mother tried her best to point out that it would have been similar if the teacher was asked to do simple arithmatic just becasue she was asked to do so - when what would interest her more would have been geometry - or something else just on the cusp of her understanding that could excite her. Unfortuantly, my mother could never get the teacher to realize the problem. Right now, that brother of mine is an auto mechanic - as figuring out the problems with cars was something he could relate to - rather than continuing on his education to get a more challenging job. This is just as bad as "No Child Left Behind" We should also have "No Child Held Behind". The other example I have is my son. When he was at Kindergarten age - his math capabilities were doing multiplication and division. His reading - he read to me the first page of Harry Potter. These were two of the areas he was showing promise in. If he were to be put into the first grade, he would have had problems. We were thinking of petitioning to have him pushed into the second grade - skipping first - when we heard of the ALPS program. He has been pushing himself - and leading other kids in the class on capabilities in several areas. He studies Geometry on his own over one summer and was able to take pre-calc in the 9th grade. If we do not have the IB middle-years in this district, we at least need to have something in place to let the kids push forward to the fullest of t

On the one hand Canyons likes to tout students with great academic success such as perfect ACT scores. And on the other hand they are totally dismantling Gifted education. Do they not realize that these same students that are achieving so much are a product of these same programs that they are dismantling? The biggest problem is the attitude that gifted education is elitist and takes away from the student body as a whole. My experience as a parent of 4 children (2 who have graduated and 1 who will graduate in June) is that having a gifted program brings resources to all.

For thise of us who worked to hard years ago to build a quality gifted program in this valley, this is especially painful. We once led the way in quality. Now we are looked at as a district of robots.

We need to compete with the rest of the world. We need all the help we can get. Programs like this prepare our children better to compete and be successful. It would be a shame to take this away.

IB programs are amazing, and learning is amazing, and doing the absolute most that you possibly can is amazing.
