SUCCESS!

Berkeley Unified School District (BUSD) has organized a new community meeting:

Cafeteria Project Meeting, Monday June 10th, 2013 6:30 - 8 p.m.

Please come and let your voice be heard.

We the undersigned petition the Berkeley Unified School District (BUSD) to hold a community meeting to review construction plans for a new Cafeteria building on the Longfellow Middle School garden site and delay the June 26th final presentation to the BUSD Board.

After inadequate notification to the community, the Longfellow Site Planning Committee hosted the first and only planned community meeting on May 14th where schematic design plans were made public to the 4 (four) attendees.

By displacing the garden the proposed design is in direct conflict with the BUSD Food Policy, and locating the cafeteria across Ward Street from the main school raises serious concerns about student safety and school-wide security.  Parents, teachers, staff, administrators and community members are committed to the building and funding of both excellent cafeteria facilities and vibrant school gardens.

note: After completing the form and clicking "sign" your signature will be counted, you do not have donate.

The district finally agreed to a meeting but we cannot stop pushing for a design that actually protects our students and our green space. I am talking to neighbors every day who feel just as ignored by these rushed plans as I do.

Seeing the momentum behind this garden has been overwhelming. I keep thinking about how much our kids stand to lose if we let this site disappear without a real fight. We have pushed the district to finally start listening to us.

That garden is the best part of the school. Why destroy something that actually teaches the kids where their food comes from.

Slow down and listen to the people who live here. The current plan sucks.

Crossing the street for lunch is a bad idea. Seriously who thought this was safe for middle schoolers? Rethink this plan.

Ridiculous that nobody was told about this. Berkeley parents deserve better communication than this.

The design makes absolutely no sense. Ward street is busy enough as it is without kids running across it during a lunch rush.
