Without the historical record we are condemned to repeat the failings of our ancestors keep the windows and embrace our past, so that it may save as a reminder for all of us

They must not be Christian. Jackson Educated his Slaves/Children at Penalty of Law. Lee freed his Slaves 10 years before the war.

We have gone from a society looking for common ground and reconciliation to a society bent on the vilification and obliteration of the memory of those who in the distant past found themselves on the loosing side of history..Who is next ? Washington, Lincoln. Roosevelt, (one or both) Wilson,Truman, Johnson ?

As I posted on FB we are lifelong Episcopalians. We feel that the destruction of these historic icons are morally and ethically equivalent to the destruction of the Bamiyan Buddhas by Taliban extremists. Woodrow Wilson was said to be a notorious segregationist: are they going to dig him up too and destroy his crypt...which is a few bays down?...

This is not the same situation as the flag flying over the state capitol of SC. This is a historical display. It is no different than the cross of St George depictef in countless English churches in one form or another. I am sure some groups would take it as an affront because of the Crusades or the long rule of the British empire. But is is part of our fabric. It is easy to take offense with any symbol. Are we going to take down everything because some are thin-skinned?

Please leave the windows alone. We share a past that is bleak and based on rebellion but these were godly men.

The windows show that I as a descendent of multiple Confederate Soldiers am still welcome in this Church and the Nations Capital.

As an Episcopalian I am ashamed and embarrassed at the Dean's call for the removal of these windows. So much for a church that is broad enough to accept all under its roof. We need to confront our history and look the complete picture, not simply a flag. At his death, Robert E. Lee was the Sr. Warden of his Church in Lexington and had his fatal stroke after a 5 hour Vestry meeting. Let us consider the man's whole career of military service and service to God before we remove windows in a knee-jerk reaction. While their service to the Confederacy may be what brought Lee and jackson to the forefront of American History, it is their devotion to God that honors them in stained glass in a cathedral.
