The administration of Island Coast Highschool in Cape Coral, Florida is threatening to take away the band program. We currently do not have a band director but that doesn't mean we can't have a band, with dedicated students to the organization we can teach ourselves and guide ourselves until we get a director. Band has been such an important oart of my life since I started in 7th grade, band has always been my escape if I have a bad day, I go to band and it all disappears when I see the laughing faces of all of my friends, the whole school loves our band and is excited whenever they hear us play in the halls, during games, or at the pep rallys. We have so many people who are dedicated to band and want to even persue it as a career, why would the school just take the program away? I believe that me and all of the other band kids who are just as dedicated into the program as I am will work together and we can save the band, we can teach ourselves until a band director comes in, we can keep the school spirit at Island Coast, and we will keep fighting for the things we love because thats just how much it means to us.
Band has almost always been a part of my life since 6th grade and is sometimes the only place I feel accepted as a person (the other place is choir obviously), furthermore, I believe that we do have the power to be able to teach/practice ourselves, and as hectic as the band program may be right now, it doesn’t mean that the program should be taken away entirely. I don’t just see this as a removal of an activity, getting rid of the program is getting rid of a part of me, as almost all of my friends have been made here. Removing this program is a permanent solution to a temporary problem and is basically like hacking a chunck of myself off and I am not having it.
