Final supporters
This Wednesday, our county board of supervisors is voting to sign up to a 30 year lease and turn the beautiful Schweser's building into a corrections, parole office and drug court, and with it, bring a steady stream of drug and sex offenders to prime retail locations in our beautiful downtown. We need our city and county leaders to understand the significant ramifications of putting something like this alongside eateries, boutiques, community centers, and antique shops. Downtown Fremont has experienced great economic development in the last few years. Our historic downtown has welcomed a homewares store, bakery, coffee shop, wine bar, a restaurant and a community center in just the last year alone. The county needs to understand that a decision like this would not only hinder new businesses from moving into our beautiful downtown, but also change the family culture we’ve worked so hard to cultivate.

I just looked at the screen and saw 250 names which feels totally wild because this whole thing started as just a frantic thought in my head. I am honestly pacing around my kitchen right now thinking about how many people actually care about saving the downtown area from this lease disaster.

I spent the entire morning scrolling through the comments here and honestly the stories about what our downtown means to people are just crushing me in the best way possible. I have a stack of paperwork about the courthouse lease sitting on my desk right now and I am still trying to figure out why they think this is a good spot for a corrections office when there are so many better options that don't involve ruining our main street businesses. Please make sure you are ready to be at the courthouse because showing them our faces is going to be the only way they actually listen to the concerns we keep repeating.

I am looking at the count and we are just hovering right under a hundred right now which feels like a weirdly heavy number to hit before we head to the courthouse. If you can just send this link to a few people in your neighborhood before the sun goes down it might be the thing that makes them pause and listen to us on Wednesday.

Our city and civic leaders are failing the citizens of Fremont. Allowing the sale and occupation of this building for this purpose adds zero value - in fact it adds negative value - to the future of Fremont and the positive evolution of our historic downtown. Our City Leaders need to take a stand and stop this from occurring.
From a small business owners aspect I know how vital it is to have the correct environment and neighbors to make yourself successful. The county is looking at this from a financial decision and not from the economical hardship it may put on the business owners already in place.
In order to allow fremonts historic downtown to grow I believe we need to prohibit a government agency from being in the downtown district. Especially where convicted offenders would frequent. Please stop this motion. Keep Historic Fremont Downtown Family (kid) Friendly!
Can you imagine something like this going in the heart of the Old Market or Hay Market in Lincoln?? I know what it is to have real estate sit empty so I do sympathize but, for Gods sake, a drug court??? We can and should do better.
This building has more potential than this, there is the building attached to the courthouse which could be utilized for such a purpose. I have always thought that building would be a great space for a children's museum, or shops, restaurant, condos etc...
Thanks for protecting our downtown!
This is a major step to destroy the historic downtown that is finally trying to revive into something great. The county obviously has money to burn and very little vision.

Downtown Fremont needs to stay a Historic District. We are know all over for this and we need to keep this area of Fremont Historic. Don't loose something that we can preserve for generations the history of Fremont Nebraska!!!
