Please sign this petition if you are against the proposed alterations to Fitzwilliam Square, Wicklow (The Smoothing Iron) by Wicklow Town Council/National Transport Authority.
The proposed alterations include changing the location of the Halpin monument, removal of the railings, paving over the grassed area with granite slabs and replacing the current lighting with modern type lighting. The proposed changes will see Fitzwilliam Square transformed into the way the Market Square looks today.
If Wicklow Town Council wish to spend any money on The Smoothing Iron, it should be to repair the many cracks that currently exist in the surrounding wall. No other changes or alterations are required, as the monument is perfect as it is, and a proud part of Wicklow Town's heritage.
Do you really want The Smoothing Iron to look the same way as Market Square does today?
If not, please sign this petition and make all your family and friends, both in Wicklow Town and those abroad who are originally from Wicklow Town, aware of this petition.

Market square looks sterile enough as it is. Dont do the same to Fitzwilliam square please!!
Keep the grass! We dont need more concrete in wicklow town. Please stop this madness.
The monument should stay where it is. Total waste of money changing it just for the sake of it.
Ridiculous idea. Leave the square alone it has character exactly the way it is. Start fixing the potholes instead of ruining our history.
FIX THE WALLS. Everyone knows they are crumbling. Dont touch the rest of it.

I grew up playing here. It would be a crying shame to cover it in granite slabs. Absolute disgrace.
