CTE programs are the most important programs in school, especially since the cost of college is so high that most students can't afford it and must go to work right out of high school. With no CTE programs, these students have no skills. If you want skilled workers in this state, you must support CTE programs. You get what you pay for and if you don't pay anything, you get nothing.

In 2011, the state legislature cut CTE funding by 53%, now they want another cut for next year. For Florence Unified, we are already looking at cutting CTE programs to help lower costs for next year. This will effect student opportunities.
In anticipation of the cuts, three CTE programs are slated to be closed, and we are going to cancel transporting our Poston students over to our JTED. We currently serve 546 unduplicated students in CTE for FUSD. We anticipate this number dropping significantly next year because we will be eliminating CTE programs.
These students will need to go somewhere. If not CTE, then where will they be placed in our school? As a Board Member of Florence Unified, I urge you to restore the current CTE funding for next year.

How can AZ reduce funding in CTE while increasing demands for Education Career Action Plans? CTE is often where students first experience tangible job knowledge and skills.

My name is Tansor Diltz. I'm 19 years old and just graduated from CAVIT a cte program school. I took the veterinary assistant program and it helped shape me into the person I am today. My Cte opened so many doors for me and gave me so many wonderful experiences. From the skills I gained I am now 19 with a full time job with full benefits and a very stable income while I work my way through college. Taking a Cte program was one of the best decisions I've ever made and I truly hope you rethink this decision

CTE programs help students explore, define, or even redefine their career paths. It helped me receive my Veterinary Assistant Certificate at the same time I graduated high school. It also helped me further my passion for this field and push me to become a CVT (Certified Veterinary Technician.) CTE programs definitely go a long way for students. I believe it's more beneficial to a student if they experienced what it's like to work in the field they desire than to just talk about it. I enjoyed everything about my CTE program more than I did my core classes in high school.

Completing a CTE program at Mingus Union High School (my home town high school in Cottonwood) typically increases graduation rates by 17% to 20%. Looking at the 2014 school wide graduation rate of 80.1% for Mingus, 262 of 327 students graduated on time. Of those 262 graduates, 137 of them completed a CTE program and as a sub group they graduated at a 97.8% rate. Without CTE Mingus Union’s overall graduation rate would drop to under 67%! CTE at Mingus allows for early entry into the workforce with a job that provides a sustainable wage. Five CTE Automotive students in the senior class have obtain jobs in the automotive field last fall and three of these students will go on to advance their education with their employers picking up the cost! CTE is a win for Arizona’s future economic development and provides support for government by keeping underemployed students off of public welfare and out of prison. CTE it’s all about high demand, higher paying jobs that give our students a chance to compete in the real world.
