Ironton Park is a special place for any locals from Ouray and many visitors . It was purchased from private owners by a federal public lands trust to prevent private development and turned over to the USFS for stewardship. Crystal Lake has been a cherished part of Ironton since its inception. Evidently the current district ranger does not share this view and is all too willing to abandon this reservoir, even though prior rangers allocated funding to reinforce the dam which is now considered unsafe. It is clear that a different steward is necessary to maintain this land in its intended form. The City of Ouray would be a logical steward of Crystal Lake considering both its water rights interest in the reservoir and its interest in preserving the historical legacy of Ironton Park.

As president of the Ouray County Historical Society, I fully support the conveyance and subsequent re-filling of the Crystal Resevoir to the City of Ouray

This Crystal Lake is a Unique, magnificent and cherished local community asset. It’s ridiculous that it was even drained in the first place, as the massive rock dam is in perfectly good shape, and only holding back a paltry amount of shallow water when full! This must be restored to its form of glory!

Crystal Reservoir embodies the heart and soul of Ouray County and the San Juan Mountains. This was the only free public lake/reservoir that you could drive up to in a sedan (others need high-clearance 4wd) - and fish for cutthroat, hike Hayden Mtn from 4 trailheads, ski, picnic...Its importance for public safety and wildfire response. Our economic driver for leaf peepers seeking reflections. We need to honor the Red Mtn Project and pass the Conveyance Act to keep it full of water and secure public access!

Crystal Lake is not only needed for water augmentation/firefighting purposes but was one of the few water sources providing fishing opportunities in Ouray County. The parking area next to the reservoir was always packed with tourists and locals especially during the fall aspen season.
