As a long-time Hellblazer fan and disciple of all things John Constantine, I was geeked beyond words when I heard that NBC had green-lit a show based on my favorite exorcist/demonologist/master of the dark arts. I have been on-board since Day 1, and only got more excited each time some Constantine-related news was released. I was sold on Matt Ryan before ever seeing a second of footage. He looked the part from the start and he never disappointed, not even a slight bit, once the show began. Ryan managed to capture the smartass angst and tortured confidence required play the titular anti-hero. The writing has been solid since the start, but it managed to get even stronger as the first season progressed. It touched on a plethora of emotions while staying true to the nature and spirit of the source material. I laughed, I cried, I jumped up and sang along to "Anarchy In The U.K." And despite airing in the usually pre-doomed "Friday Night Death Slot", the show gained momentum each week and managed to add new fans with every episode. I personally introduced quite a few people to the show and almost all of them were hooked immediately. I do not understand why NBC would even contemplate not bringing this show back for a second season. But apparently they are and because of that, here we are as well. Granted, there are a lot of weak shows on TV that need to be mercifully removed from the airwaves. Constantine is not one of those shows. I love this series, and I hope the network gives it a shot at a second season.
