Did the school analyze how much tuition they will lose, when they cut the program and no longer attract students that also want to play rugby?

I am a New England College alum who played rugby AND graduated in 2001. While enrolled, we were not recognized as a club sport and received no school funding. Now as an alumni, NEC Rugby has enjoyed a renaissance and are heading back to the NSCRO National Championship in Colorado. After graduation, I continued to play rugby in Washington, D.C. for the Potomac Athletic Club, one of the top flight rugby teams in the nation. The relationships I built through rugby will last a lifetime and taught me lessons I would have never learned anywhere else. Before you make your decision, please follow the science and perform your own research. Football incurs more head injuries than rugby because of a simple focus on technique. The laws of rugby state that a player must attempt to wrap (with their arms) in order for a tackle to be considered legal. I coach high school rugby and have been practicing since August for a season that begins in March because I want to make sure each and every kid that I am responsible for can tackle safely and responsibly. This means no lifting of opposing players (this is illegal by the way) and ensuring player safety. Please consider the effects that your decisions will have. As an Oberlin alum, I've come across numerous Colby alum in my days in SF. As a rugger who quit playing college football one of my motivations was the injuries I saw occurring on the gridiron were not present on the rugby pitch. It's a much safer sport and from such an educated institution, I would expect such "baby out with the bath water" logical fallacies.Please reconsider your support for the sport. It holds the potential to teach the next generation of Americans leadership under fatigue, team work without centralized leadership and competition with respect.

I started playing rugby at Colby; played during my junior year abroad in Ireland, played on two USA Superleague teams, invited to USA Eagles tryouts, coached high school rugby and founded a rugby team at the University of Michigan Business School. Had rugby not been available at Colby back in '91, I never would have enrolled there - and perhaps keeping people like me out of Colby is what ultimately drive this cowardly decision. My sympathies to the current ruggers - you are being treated with an utter lack of respect and fairness from an institution that preaches integrity and inclusiveness.

I am extremely disappointed both in the decision to cut the rugby program and in the administration's handling of the situation. It seems that this decision was hastily made without considering any alternatives. Asking the team to raise $2.5 million dollars is nothing short of ridiculous and is not asolution

Collegiate club rugby is a great avenue for many student athletes to continue competing in sports throughout their educational career. Rugby in New England has grown significantly, and while I personally competed against Colby college, it would be shameful for an institution to lose a program citing financial hardship. Good luck to Colby college and others in the New England rugby community

I am not a student of Colby College, but, as a freshman at Vassar College, I can say that joining the rugby team has changed my life for the better. Not only has it opened doors for opportunities I wouldn't have even dreamed of before joining rugby, it has also provided me an extra support system, which is always helpful in the stressful life of a college freshman. The students of Colby joined rugby by their own discretion, aware of the risks to their health. Please allow them the chance to keep on playing the sport they not only love, but fiercely for with an admirable passion.

Although I never attended Colby College, I played rugby at a similar liberal arts institution: Carleton College. I can honestly say that joining this sport and the family I found as part of the team was the best decision I made while during my four years here. It helped me grow to be a more responsible, hardworking, and passionate adult, and even allowed me to pull through some tough times and graduate. I would not be the man I am today without this sport.

Rugby is one of the most empowering sports for women. It creates a unique atmosphere in which women are allowed to be aggressive which is socially unacceptable almost everywhere else. If there's one sport you should keep it should be rugby because it shows that it is ok and even great for a woman to be strong, powerful and aggressive. I'm a member of the bowdoin womens rugby team and I cant even begin to explain how much rugby has helped me grow as an individual and make some amazing friends. Keep the Colby rugby team! It is a valuable and unique outlet and an asset to your school.

Rugby is one of the only Olympic sports in which none of the rules or regulations of game play are adapted for women. There are dangers inherent in almost any sport. Raising awareness and holding athletes to a high standard of play is how we should deal with safety risks—not by cutting the program.

I've been playing rugby for six years. I'm only a junior in high school. I'm looking into colleges, and one of my mandatory requirements when looking into a school is rugby. Lots of girls my age are thinking of the same situation. You should keep rugby forever and watch the movie Forever Strong.
