I worked in alumni giving from 1999-2003. I saw first hand, through conversations with alumni, how a difficult decision to close down the fraternities at Colby severed the relationship between a generation of alumni and the college. I am sorry to say that the decision to end Colby Rugby will certainly have the same impact, but I am not sure that Colby leadership has the same solid reasoning for this current decision to destroy a program. I feel they must look closely at whether the annual cost of the rugby program provides enough savings to rectify the damage that this decision will cause. I hope they choose to protect this program that has broght so much to so many.

Did Colby analyze the relative risk, benefits, cost of all sports? If so where can we review the data? If not a college that develops critical thinking skills in its students has set a very poor example!

You really should take a strong look at every option to keep this sport alive and well. With the relatively low cost, compared to other sports, Rugby exemplifies team building, problem solving, and physical fitness. These three aspect of the sport help all that play it to lead a more well rounded and fuller life. Isn't this what you want for all of the students that attend you college.

a "growing awareness of health and safety risks of a high collision/impact sport." Does this mean funding will be cut to the American Football teams too? Rugby deserves funding!!

One of the highlights of my Colby career, rugby gave me a fantastic group of friends and a powerful way to exercise and have fun as a team both spring and fall. I have continued to play after school and love the sport. Please don't drop it!
